Reducing Credit Card Debt

I have a lot of credit card debt and am not sure how to best pay it off. Any suggestions?

There are several things you can do to tackle even the most difficult of debts. Let's discuss a few:

1) Put yourself on a budget. Know where you are spending your money each month, even for the little things. Once you have done this, review each item to determine if you can cut back, postpone, or eliminate spending for this item altogether, at least until your debt is reduced or eliminated. The goal is to spend less than you make. Any extra cash you can find should be divided between reducing debt and increasing savings.

2) Create a repayment plan. Determine how much you can apply toward your debt each month, and work on paying off those cards with the highest interest rates first. Then, estimate how long it will take to repay your debt given your planned payment schedule. This will give you a track to run on, and will help you monitor yourself later to see if you are still on schedule.

3) Share your raise with your creditor. Each time you receive extra cash, once again, split it between the creditor and the savings account. You will end up not only reducing your debt, but also creating a fund that can be used later instead of pulling out the plastic.

4) Seek help. If you are in over your head, you can contact your creditors and tell them you would like to set up a repayment plan. Many companies are very willing to work with those who show they are serious about paying off their debt. While you are at it, you may even be able to renegotiate a better rate. And, if you are still having difficulty, consult with a reputable financial counselor.
